Made from rice bags. Made for Singapore.
The Song He Rice Bag Notebook Sleeve is one of The Interchange's most iconic products and for good reason. It starts life as a Song He rice bag, collected directly from Song He and our community, before being cleaned, cut, and handcrafted into a durable notebook sleeve right here in our Bukit Merah studio.
Song He is one of Singapore's most recognisable household staples. Chances are, you grew up with one of these bags in your kitchen. Transforming it into something you carry every day is our way of keeping that familiarity alive and keeping it out of the bin.
Why rice bag?
PP woven rice bags are one of the most under-appreciated materials around. Tough, water-resistant, and built to carry 10kg of rice without breaking a sweat, they're more than capable of protecting your notebook. The woven polypropylene surface is naturally waterproof, giving your notebook a layer of protection against rain, spills, and everyday bag chaos.
Beyond function, each sleeve carries the unmistakable Song He colourway; that red, white, and orange woven pattern that's instantly recognisable to anyone who's grown up in Singapore. It's local identity, repurposed.
Now in V3 - our most refined version yet, with improvements to how each sleeve is completed and finished.
Two sizes available:
The B6 sleeve is sized for the OFFCUT Zero Waste Notebook (120 × 180mm) - a coverless, fully recyclable notebook that pairs perfectly with a sleeve that gives it a home.
The A5 sleeve fits the Midori A5 Grid Notebook for those who prefer a larger writing surface.
Both are available as standalone sleeves or as bundles with their paired notebook.

Age Requirement
This upcycling experience is designed for adults. The session involves a heat press and computerised sewing machine, and we want everyone to engage with the equipment safely and confidently.
Cancellations & Refunds
Tickets are non-refundable. If you're unable to attend, you're welcome to transfer your spot to someone else; just notify us at least 48 hours before the session so we can update our records. Your $60 goes directly towards The Interchange's materials research and community programming, so every booking genuinely makes a difference.
Organiser Cancellation
If we need to cancel or reschedule for any reason, you'll receive a full refund or priority access to the next available date; your choice.
Late Arrivals
The session runs for exactly 60 minutes and each step builds on the last. We recommend arriving 5–10 minutes early. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, we may not be able to accommodate you and the ticket will be forfeited.
Materials
Please bring 3–4 clean, dry, tape-free polymailers (A4 size). We'll have a small reserve on hand, but availability is not guaranteed for those who arrive without. The character of your cardholder depends on what you bring; the more interesting the mailer, the more interesting the outcome.
Photography & Media
We document our sessions for research and promotional purposes. By attending, you consent to being photographed or filmed. If you'd prefer not to be included, let us know on arrival and we'll respect that without question.
Equipment Use
You'll be working with a computerised sewing machine and heat press. Full guidance is provided before use. The Interchange is not liable for personal injury arising from improper use of equipment after instruction has been given.
