Singapore's most addictive snack habit: ultra-shiny, highly engineered, and virtually impossible to recycle standardly.

What is it?

Potato chip bags look like simple plastic packaging, but they are actually high-tech multi-layer laminates. They typically combine an outer biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) layer for graphics, a microscopic vacuum-deposited aluminum layer to block oxygen and light, and an inner polyethylene (PE) layer to heat-seal the bag shut.

In Singapore, thousands of these metallic pouches pass through homes, offices, and schools daily. Because the plastic film and aluminum layers are tightly bonded together and contaminated with food oils, virtually 100% of snack bags end up straight in the incinerator.

What does it feel like?

In its original state, a chip bag is ultra-lightweight, slippery, and aggressively crinkly, with a mirror-like silver interior. It tears easily once nicked and will sometimes hold a smooth fold.

Why can't it just be recycled?

While the individual plastics are technically recyclable, metallized snack pouches present severe recycling hurdles:

Why they fall through the cracks:

  • Multi-Material Bonding: The paper-thin aluminum coating is fused directly to the plastic layers, making mechanical separation impossible in standard facilities.
  • Oil & Salt Contamination: Residual food oils ruin mechanical plastic melting processes, requiring excessive washing that is not economically viable.
  • Facility Limitations: Singapore lacks specialized chemical recycling infrastructure capable of processing complex metallized composite films.

So, what becomes of them? Without a viable local recycling route, millions head straight from the trash to the incinerator. Worse still, unclean packaging can contaminate batches of clean recyclables, rendering the whole batch unrecyclable.

That's the gap The Interchange is working in.

What we've learned working with it

We began experimenting with post-consumer chip bags to turn loud, single-use foil waste into durable composite materials. Here is what our studio trials revealed:

Preparing the Material

Degreasing & Washing:

Cut open one flat seam. Wash thoroughly with warm water and grease-cutting dish soap.

Drying:

Wipe and let the packaging dry completely.

Sewing and Construction

Technical Framework

The Right Needle

Employ a sharp, fine needle.

Longer Stitches

Calibrate your equipment for a longer stitch length. If your stitches are mapped too close together, they form a perforated line that causes the material to sheer and rip under tension.

No Pins

Punctures in this matrix are permanent. Utilize standard sewing clips or double-sided tape to hold your patterns together instead.

What's still being figured out

  • Heat Response Exploration: We have yet to experiment with heat-fusing snack packaging. Our next phase of studio trials will test temperature limits, pressing times, and layer fusing to see how the metallized film behaves under heat.
  • Tear Resistance & Durability: Raw chip bag material can tear easily once nicked or punctured. We are exploring ways to improve overall durability—whether through backing materials, structural reinforcement, or modified construction techniques—to make finished pieces resilient enough for daily use.
