THE INTERCHANGE

Two filmmakers got tired of making waste. So they built a lab to fix it. Today, The Interchange is Singapore's circular economy lab, researching materials, running workshops, and making products that prove waste is just a design flaw.

WHY WE STARTED THE INTERCHANGE

The pandemic gave Nicholas and YT, two creatives from Singapore's film industry, something unexpected: time to ask harder questions.

They'd spent years telling other people's stories. Now they wanted to build something of their own, something that mattered beyond the screen. So they started making things with their hands.

Nicholas taught himself 3D printing and laser engraving. Ying Tong opened a small stationery shop, starting with hand-made stickers. They were good at it. But as the offcuts piled up - wood scraps, failed prints, excess paper, they couldn't ignore what they were seeing. Every act of making left a mark.

That discomfort became a commitment. If they were going to build things, they were going to build them right, with minimal waste, circular thinking, and a focus on what lasts.

GROWING THE IDEA

Their curiosity didn't stop at the workbench. They started growing food. Within 100 days, a balcony of thriving plants. By December 2023, they were raising chickens and quails.

Then came Kampy, a 400 sq ft off-grid sustainable living demo site at City Sprouts Henderson. Equal parts camp and kampung, Kampy is a living proof-of-concept: solar power, IoT monitoring, vertical gardens, a hydroponics system, responsible waste management. Not a proposal. A working model.

 WHAT WE'RE BUILDING NOW

The Interchange is the infrastructure behind the loop:

  • A workshop space where anyone can learn to make with circular materials
  • A research lab that tests what waste can actually become
  • A shop where every product funds the next experiment
  • A platform, theinterchange.cc, that surfaces Singapore businesses building with circularity at their core

We're not waiting for the system to change. We're demonstrating what the new one looks like.
