THE INTERCHANGE

The Interchange is a multidisciplinary social enterprise that combines research, design, and fabrication to develop accessible and replicable circular economy solutions for communities.

Why We Started The Interchange?

The pandemic forced a reevaluation for Nicholas and Ying Tong, co-founders with a creative background in Singapore's film industry. They missed bringing ideas to life, but this time with a focus that felt more impactful. Their desire to tell a different kind of story – one where creativity met sustainability – took hold.

Nicholas, leveraging his newly acquired 3D printing and laser engraving skills, began crafting original products. Meanwhile, Ying Tong fulfilled a long-held dream of opening a stationery store, starting with self-made stickers. However, their exciting journey revealed a sobering reality: the amount of waste they generated. Wood scraps, failed prints, and excess paper served as constant reminders of their environmental footprint.

This sparked a commitment to circularity. They resolved to create products with minimal waste and a focus on the future. But their ambitions grew. Venturing into urban farming, initially daunting, became a challenge they embraced. Within 100 days, vibrant plant life flourished under their care.

In December 2023, their green thumb extended to include caring for chickens and quails.

To further their vision, they secured a plot at City Sprouts Henderson. Here, they're building Kampy, a playful twist on "camp" and "kampung" (village). This 400 sq ft off-grid sustainable living demo site serves as a showcase for what's possible.

Kampy incorporates features like IoT monitoring, renewable energy generation (including solar power!), responsible waste management, and space-saving innovations like vertical gardens and a hydroponics system. By educating the community and demonstrating the feasibility of off-grid living, Kampy aims to inspire individuals and contribute to Singapore's national sustainability goals.

Their vision extends beyond their own endeavors. They established interchange.cc, a platform to share and highlight Singapore businesses that prioritize circularity within their models. Through articles, they share insights on how Singapore can move towards greater circularity in daily life.
